After a year we will never forget, it’s safe to say that we’re all looking forward to creating new memories on our summer staycation. If you’re travelling with children, you’ll want to fill your day with fun things to see, do and explore. To help you plan your Donegal staycation, we have created a short blog on eight family friendly things to do in Inishowen this summer:
Wild Alpaca Way
Head to Ireland’s most northernly point to find some friendly alpacas at Donegal’s Wild Alpaca Way. It’s a great day out for young and old and only a 30-minute drive from Ballyliffin. While in the Malin area, be sure to check out the location where Star Wars was shot.
Wild Ireland
An absolute must in Inishowen is a trip to Wild Ireland. See brown bears, European wolves, wild boars and lynx as well as taking walks through fairy trails, play parks and much more. Wild Ireland can be busy so we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
Ballyliffin By Sea
Go dolphin spotting, discover Inishtrahull and see Ballyliffin from the wild Atlantic Ocean with an exciting boat trip. Check out Inishowen Boating or Amazing Grace Yacht Charters for offers, availability and bespoke tours.
Water Sports and Surfing
Donegal has the longest coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way so if you’ve got water babies in the house, you won’t be stuck for choice. We highly recommend checking out Inish Adventures and Inishowen Surf School. Inish Adventures offers hours of fun with a floating water park and Inishowen Surf School means the whole family can do something fun together.
Beach Walks and Play Parks
There’s no end to the amazing beach walks on offer in Inishowen. After a light stroll on Pollan Beach, check out the beach play area for younger children. The wooden play area is the perfect end to a beach day here in Ballyliffin.
Doagh Famine Village
Open seven days a week, Doagh Famine Village tells the story of Irish life from the Great Famine of the 1840s through until the present day. Tour guides will take you on a journey showing how families and communities have lived on the edge generation after generation, adapting and surviving. A fantastic combination of informative storytelling and life size exhibits.
Fort Dunree
Little history buffs will love learning all about the history of Fort Dunree, located in Inishowen. As well as leaning about the history of the fort there’s also scenic walks, gun exhibitions, a wildlife discovery room and much more. Exhibition/Conference Space
Ballyliffin Golf Club
For rising future Rory McIlroy’s, take to the Ballyliffin Golf Club links courses. A great day out for golfing families looking to play one of Ireland’s best courses. Tee times are limited, so early booking is advised.
We have packages available for all attractions, so please do let our team know if you’re planning on visiting these areas during your stay at our 4 star family-run hotel.
