October Mid-Term Break: Ten Things To Do In Inishowen
Published on
19 October 2021
After a busy start to the school year, there’s no doubt that we all need a mid-term break to recharge the batteries before the mad Christmas rush. If you’re still wondering what to do or where to go, we’ve compiled a list of ten things to do in Inishowen this October mid-term:
1. Halloween In Derry
Halloween lovers will love the world-class Halloween experience in Derry. There is an amazing atmosphere in the city with ghouls, ghosts and events. There’s also a series of events happening in Buncrana this year too. Ballyliffin is the perfect base to visit both destinations. Check out Derry Halloween for a full list of events.
2. Golf at Ballyliffin Golf Club
It might be entering the winter season, but the two links courses at Ballyliffin Golf Club are playable all year round. Perfect day out for golfing enthusiasts looking to improve their golf game. Tee times are limited, so early booking is advised.
3. Wild Alpaca Way
Head to Ireland’s most northernly point to find some friendly alpacas at Donegal’s Wild Alpaca Way. Open during the October mid-term, it’s a great day out for young and old and only a 30-minute drive from Ballyliffin. While in the Malin area, be sure to check out the location where Star Wars was shot. Book your tickets HERE.
4. Inishowen 100
Not everyone loves to travel, but when you throw in some jaw-dropping scenery and Donegal’s rugged backdrop, it’s worth it. It takes around five hours to complete but offers the perfect excuse to stop off and refuel in Donegal’s best cafes and restaurants.
5. Glenevin Waterfall
If you’re looking for an Instagram worthy shot, visit Glenevin Waterfall, just minutes from Ballyliffin TownHouse Boutique Hotel. A beautiful walk waits to take you to the top. Perfect autumn experience for families and couples.
6. Fireworks
Aside from the lead up of events in Derry, you must go to see the firework display on all hallows eve. A spectacular show that the whole family will love with a buzzing atmosphere. Even the teenagers will enjoy it!
7. Wild Ireland
An absolute must in Inishowen is a trip to Wild Ireland. See brown bears, European wolves, wild boars and lynx as well as taking walks through fairy trails, play parks and much more. Wild Ireland can be busy so we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
8. Beach Walks and Play Parks
There’s no end to the amazing beach walks on offer in Inishowen. After a brisk walk in the cool autumn air on Pollan Beach, check out the beach play area for kids.
9. Dunree Fort
Little history buffs will love learning all about the history of Fort Dunree, located in Inishowen. As well as leaning about the history of the fort there’s also scenic walks, gun exhibitions, a wildlife discovery room and much more.
10. Local Food & Drinks at Ballyliffin TownHouse Boutique Hotel
It might be last on the list, but it should be number one! Enjoy creamy pints of Guinness and craft cocktails along with delicious food made using quality local ingredients at our family-run boutique hotel in Ballyliffin. Book your last minute mid-term getaway HERE.

Five Reasons To Book A Last Minute Autumn Break To Inishowen
Published on
29 September 2021
We’ve waved goodbye to the 2021 summer season but that doesn’t mean the exploring has to stop. Donegal is an ideal destination all year round with so much to see, do and explore for families, couples and friends. Ballyliffin TownHouse Boutique Hotel is the perfect base to discover the best of Inishowen and here are five reasons to book that last minute autumn get-away to Inishowen:
1. Play A Round at Ballyliffin Golf Club
The beauty of having a prestige links course on our doorstep means that it’s open all year round. We’ll accept we don’t always have beautiful sunshine but brace the elements and take on one of these top-class courses at Ballyliffing Golf Club this autumn. GUI golfers can avail of special discounted prices too. Perfect idea to finally get that four-ball together while the other half relaxes at the hotel.
2. Pollan Bay
Whether it rains or shines, one thing about north Donegal is that you’ll always manage to get a brisk walk on one of our stunning beaches. Pollan Bay is just minutes away and offers sandy shores and wild Atlantic waves to blow off those cobwebs and help you recharge the batteries.
3. Fun For Families
Derry has grown its reputation as the best spot in Europe to celebrate Halloween so book a mid-term getaway for all the family to enjoy with children’s event and much spookier events for teenagers. There’s also a world-class fireworks display on Halloween night and some events will take place in Inishowen too. Check out the full range of events HERE.
4. Total Seclusion
Working and living in city life can be tiring so escape the busy life for a weekend or few days of total seclusion. Wrap yourself around the cosy fire with a book, drink coffee, enjoy a cocktail and switch off from the busy world around us. Our cosy family-run boutique hotel offers just that.
5. Things To Do
Aside from Donegal’s stunning coastline and jaw-dropping scenery, Donegal has so much to do. Take a trip to Fort Dunree for a tour, visit Dough Famine Village to learn about history, go see the alpacas at Wild Alpaca Way, drive the Inishowen 100 and don't forget to add a stop at the experience the Glenevin waterfall.
Ballyliffin TownHouse Boutique Hotel is the perfect base to tick off all the above. We’re a four star family-run hotel and superior is our standard. Book your autumn getaway now and #KeepDiscovering our emerlad island has to offer. There’s never been a better time to turn on that out of office.
See you soon. Book now by clicking HERE or call our reservations team on (074) 937 8300.

HOLE IN ONE: Top Golf Courses To Play In Ireland
Published on
11 July 2021
With the longest coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way, it is no wonder Donegal boasts some of Ireland’s (if not the world’s) best links golf courses. Experience world-class golf when you stay in the 4* Ballyliffin TownHouse Boutique Hotel and play some of the top golf courses in Ireland. We can offer exclusive green fee rates and we also offer a drying room for your clubs as well as transport from Derry and Belfast airport.
Ballyliffin Golf Club (Glashedy Links and Old Links)
Ballyliffin Golf Club took centre stage in 2018 when the club hosted the Irish Open and is acknowledged as one of the finest golf resorts in the world. We are immensely proud to say that these championship courses are right on our doorstep, just minutes away. Both courses are a great test for golfers and both courses are in outstanding condition. “Ballyliffin’s two courses are a must play on any golf trip to Ireland.” Rory McIlroy.
Royal Portrush Golf Club
Once a small fishing village, Portrush is now home to international golf destination Royal Portrush Golf. A short trip from Ballyliffin, this is one course you want to play when you are exploring the northwest of Ireland. Royal Portrush Golf Club is set in spectacular rolling sand dunes with breath taking coastal views.
Portstewart Golf Club
Portstewart Golf Club is home to three top-class links courses, The Old Course, The Strand and The Riverside Course. The club hosted many major tournaments over the years including the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Only a short drive away from Ballyliffin, we’d add it to the bucket list of courses to play in Ireland.
Rosapenna Golf Club
The 4* Rosapenna Golf Resort is another highly recommended golf course to play. Home to three courses, The Old Tom Morris, Sandy Hills and St. Patrick’s Links, you can expect challenging holes with views overlooking Sheephaven Bay.
Portsalon Golf Club
Ranked in the top 25 courses in Ireland, Portsalon Golf Club is one of the founding members of the GUI. This stunning golf course is dotted under Ballymastocker and golfers can take in views of Inishowen from this course. Designed by Pat Ruddy, the course has gone under some major changes and improvements over the last decade with guidance from Irish golfer Paul McGinley.
Ballyliffin TownHouse Boutique Hotel can offer excellent green fees rates and golf packages for golfers and groups. For more information call our reservations team on +353 (0)74 937 8300

Eight Family Friendly Things To Do In Inishowen This Summer
Published on
29 June 2021
After a year we will never forget, it’s safe to say that we’re all looking forward to creating new memories on our summer staycation. If you’re travelling with children, you’ll want to fill your day with fun things to see, do and explore. To help you plan your Donegal staycation, we have created a short blog on eight family friendly things to do in Inishowen this summer:
Wild Alpaca Way
Head to Ireland’s most northernly point to find some friendly alpacas at Donegal’s Wild Alpaca Way. It’s a great day out for young and old and only a 30-minute drive from Ballyliffin. While in the Malin area, be sure to check out the location where Star Wars was shot.
Ballyliffin By Sea
Go dolphin spotting, discover Inishtrahull and see Ballyliffin from the wild Atlantic Ocean with an exciting boat trip. Check out Inishowen Boating or Amazing Grace Yacht Charters for offers, availability and bespoke tours.
Water Sports and Surfing
Donegal has the longest coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way so if you’ve got water babies in the house, you won’t be stuck for choice. We highly recommend checking out Inish Adventures and Inishowen Surf School. Inish Adventures offers hours of fun with a floating water park and Inishowen Surf School means the whole family can do something fun together.
Beach Walks and Play Parks
There’s no end to the amazing beach walks on offer in Inishowen. After a light stroll on Pollan Beach, check out the beach play area for younger children. The wooden play area is the perfect end to a beach day here in Ballyliffin.
Doagh Famine Village
Open seven days a week, Doagh Famine Village tells the story of Irish life from the Great Famine of the 1840s through until the present day. Tour guides will take you on a journey showing how families and communities have lived on the edge generation after generation, adapting and surviving. A fantastic combination of informative storytelling and life size exhibits.
Fort Dunree
Little history buffs will love learning all about the history of Fort Dunree, located in Inishowen. As well as leaning about the history of the fort there’s also scenic walks, gun exhibitions, a wildlife discovery room and much more. Exhibition/Conference Space
Ballyliffin Golf Club
For rising future Rory McIlroy’s, take to the Ballyliffin Golf Club links courses. A great day out for golfing families looking to play one of Ireland’s best courses. Tee times are limited, so early booking is advised.
We have packages available for all attractions, so please do let our team know if you’re planning on visiting these areas during your stay at our 4 star family-run hotel.
